Filling your cup; A simple guide
“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
Norm Kelly’s quote carries just as much truth today as the day he said it. If you’ve ever felt run down and felt like you were running on empty, you have come face-to-face with this truth. In chapter 10 of Finding Your Personal Mission, I ask this. “We wouldn’t let our phone battery, or our car run out, so why do we let ourselves run out? It’s the same concept.”
So how do you take care of yourself and fill your cup? Here are some things you can do daily to fill your cup.
Eat well: This one seems easy, but in the age of fast food and eating on the run, it can be challenging. But eating well is all about putting good (not just tasty) foods in your body. In addition to this, it means taking your time when you eat. Eating too fast can cause issues that would be avoided by simply slowing down. Also, it means drinking more water. Yes, that drill sergeant was right. Drink water!
Feed your mind well: It’s not just about what you put in your body. What kind of input does your mind receive? News? Drama? Have you taken the time to listen to some good uplifting music, listen to an inspirational podcast, or simply read a good book? If you’re too busy for these, audible has books you can listen to while you are doing other things. In fact, audible is how I listen to books regularly including “Put Your Dream to the Test” and “Rejection Proof” among others. Take inventory of what you’re putting in your mind as well as your body.
Don’t forget your soul: Even if you’re not a religious person, you know when your soul feels off. What can you do to re-center your soul? One way is meditation. No one system of thinking has a lock on meditation because you can choose what you choose to focus on while meditating. You could do a random act of kindness for a stranger, donate to a local charity, pay it forward at your local coffee shop, or any of a variety of things to make yourself feel better as well.
When you take the time to look after your body, mind, and soul using these (or other) ideas, you will start to see your cup being filled more often and staying filled longer. It starts with something simple you can do. Take care of you.
